Metcon Start

“Disclaimer: I received a canister of Metcon START pre-training supplement to review as part of being a BibRave Pro. Learn more about becoming a BibRave Pro (ambassador), and check out BibRave.com to review, find and write race reviews!”

I have always wanted to try a pre-workout supplement but I have a very sensitive stomach so I was a bit reluctant to try one. When I was given the opportunity to test Metcon START for Bibrave I thought why not? What have I got to lose? I have to say I have had NO stomach issues at all! It has a light fruit punch flavor and the taste is not overpowering at all which made me super happy because fruit punch is not at the top of my favorite flavors list, but I really like the taste of this. It also mixes so easily and there are none of those unwanted clumps. Just mix 1 scoop (1/2 a scoop if you are not used to caffeine) in 12 ounces of water 15 minutes before a run or workout. I feel it gave me the energy I needed, right at the time I needed it. There was not a huge jolt but a gradual release. I had more than enough energy to get through my runs and workouts with no crash afterwards.

Metcon START is designed by athletes for athletes and it replenishes essential vitamins and electrolytes that your body needs during a run or workout. It promotes nitric oxide production, provides sustained energy release and buffers lactic acid build up. I definitely could tell that I got a gradual energy release which really kept me going.

Metcon Start is all natural with no artificial flavors, colors or sweeteners. It is paleo friendly and gluten free.

MetCon START Pre-Training

The cost is $49.99 per canister and that is approximately 30 servings so I personally do not feel it is out of line cost wise with other pre-training supplements.

Christie Clinic Illinois Marathon Virtual

“Disclaimer: I received free entry into The Christie Clinic Illinois Marathon as part of being a BibRave Pro. Learn more about becoming a BibRave Pro (ambassador), and check out BibRave.com to review, find and write race reviews!”

I was supposed to run the half marathon the end of April but due to Covid19 they decided to postpone the race until the fall. My training hit a snag as I lost my motivation but was hopeful I would find my motivation again and that the race would go on as scheduled this fall. Unfortunately they had to make the tough decision to cancel the race. I feel it was the right decision and give them major kuddos for letting us know so far in advance and giving us several options. You could either run virtual, defer to 2021 or defer to 2022. You also could change distances if you wanted. I chose to run it virtual. I am really not a fan of virtual races but I have run a few. I think the reason I am not a fan is that I always run alone so for me it just seems like I am going out for a run and not participating in a race. I miss the excitement of race day but with things the way they are, we just have to make the best of it so I try to add a little fun into my virtual races by running a route I normally do not run. I also do not take many pictures while running a race so I mix it up by taking more pictures while I am running a virtual race.

20200613_064942.jpg

I had been having some issues with my knees lately so I have yet to run the half that I planned on running in Illinois. Instead I have completed the 10k but if I am able to before the June 30th cutoff, I will complete the half.

You have until the end of June to run your virtual distance and you have until July 15th to submit your results. They give you 2 ways to submit them. You can go to your race roster account and submit manually or you can submit through the Runkeeper app. Sometime in August you will receive your race swag and finishers medal so make sure to watch my social media as I will share on there when my pack arrives.

I am hoping that next year racing will be back on and I will be able to head down to Illinois and run this race because I have heard so many great things about it.

Keep on running!

A few years ago a good friend of mine ran the full Marathon and her comments were so positive that I knew this was a race I had to put on my list! I was at another race expo this past fall and had the chance to meet the race director of the Christie Clinic Marathon, Jan Seeley. She was sweet as could be and my friend who has run the race in the past let her know what an amazing job they do putting on this event.

After suffering for almost a year with an injury, I thought that I was on the upswing and signed up for the half marathon. Training started out well and I started to build slow but now I am having issues with my big toe on the opposite foot so after trying to take 2 weeks off and still having discomfort I went to the Doctor. I have the start of arthritis in my big toe so there is not much I can do about that. Just have to keep pushing forward and rest when it flares up. Wish me luck!!

There are several different distances so there is a race for anyone! And if you are not racing why not volunteer? OR, do both! For those who are local, if you volunteer for the Illinois Marathon Race Weekend AND participate (run or walk) in any of the events, you are a Double Dipper and qualify to receive a free double dip of custard every month for a year from any of the three Culver’s located in Champaign-Urbana. The Double Dipper program starts in May of 2020 and runs through the end of April of 2021. Now that is an awesome perk!!

The Midwest hospitality continues with the following amenities:

Free daycare on April 25 is available for children of volunteers and participants at Lodgic Everyday Community’s Kids Camp. Learn more at https://illinoismarathon.com/event-schedule/childcare/

Starting at 5:30 a.m. on race morning, Saturday, April 25, in the start line staging area, Einstein Bros Bagels will host a free Bagel Bite Bar. They will serve 5,000 bagel halves and cream cheese to runners, spectators, and volunteers. Get the bagels while they last! Columbia Street Roastery will be joining them, serving hot coffee and tea.

A note from the race – “We are very excited to continue the “Golden Ticket” program at the 2020 Christie Clinic Illinois Marathon. We will be placing Golden Ticket stickers on the race bibs of several hundred entrants (across all events), awarding the lucky participants who get one with a prize from one of our sponsors…just like the golden tickets found in Willy Wonka chocolate bars! Entrants with a Golden Ticket sticker on their race bib will be directed to the Golden Ticket prize redemption booth at the expo to redeem their prize.”

Code 2020BIBRAVEILLINOIS will save you $10 off any event (5K and up)

Happy training!

Built Bar – Protein bars done right

“Disclaimer: I received three boxes of Built Bar protein bars to review as part of being a BibRave Pro. Learn more about becoming a BibRave Pro (ambassador), and check out BibRave.com to review, find and write race reviews!”

20200202_120002.jpg

I have been working really hard on trying to eat better but I have a serious sweet tooth and finding something healthy to satisfy that as well as having it taste good was hard. I was given the opportunity to try out Built Bar protein bars so I thought why not? What have I got to lose? I was sent a box of mixed flavors which included 2 of each of the following flavors: Coconut, Banana, Mint Brownie (my all time favorite), Black Cherry, Salted Caramel Chocolate, Double Chocolate Mousse, Orange, Vanilla and Raspberry. They also sent a box of Coconut Almond and a box of Peanut Butter.

You can either order a mixed box, a box with all one flavor OR a build your own box where you can choose from several different flavors. Each box contains 18 delicious bars.

20200217_155021.jpg

There are a lot of different brands of protein bars out on the market but most either have no taste, taste like sawdust or are chalky, but NOT Built bar. These are seriously the best tasting protein bars I have ever tried! They are a bit chewy but that doesn’t really bother me at all. I also threw some in the fridge and the freezer and that seemed to help a bit with the chewiness. In fact, one day when I was grabbing one out of the fridge at work one of my co-workers said “oh, built bar, one of our other co-workers eats those” So, you can bet I ran right over to her and gave her the discount code and she was so happy to save some cash on a product that she already loves. She has been eating them for some time now and has nothing but good things to say.

20200211_094504.jpg

From a hike in the woods, to the gym, or even a mid afternoon snack at the office, built bar provides the protein and taste that my body needs and wants. Most of the flavors have 15g of protein and only 110 calories. There are a few flavors that have 18g or 20g of protein and 130 to 180 calories (depending on flavor).

Built Bar is made with whey protein isolate so it is not vegan. They have no artificial preservatives, are made with natural flavoring and no coloring. Each bar is made with high quality dark chocolate which is the source of all of the sugar in the bar.

Built Bar has a rewards program where you can earn Built Bucks. You get $5 off with every 100 built bucks. There are several ways to earn them so sign up today and start saving! Clif family winery is one of the sponsors for the Napa Valley Marathon, so if you are heading there to run or just for a weekend away, why not stop by and have a glass or two of wine along with a bite to eat.

Road ID

“Disclaimer: I received a wrist ID from Road ID to review as part of being a BibRave Pro. Learn more about becoming a BibRave Pro (ambassador), and check out BibRave.com to review, find and write race reviews!”

What is Road iD? Road ID offers a variety of ways to carry ID. There are many styles to choose from like Wrist ID’s, Sidekick ID’s, shoe ID’s, dog tags, kid’s ID, medical ID’s, and even pet ID’s! They offer a variety of band types and colors for the wrist ID’s as well as badges to accessorize.  As a woman who runs alone most of the time, I can never be to safe. I don’t usually worry too much about safety because I live in a pretty safe and well traveled area, but I have been known to take a spill or two in the past and thankfully I only had a scraped knee and bruised ego but I have had friends who have been hit by cars while running, one was seriously hurt, so it is always a good thing to have some kind of ID on you just in case. happened. So always be prepared for the worst!

20191019_111921.jpg

I was given the opportunity to choose either the wrist ID or the sidekick ID and I choose the wrist ID along with two badges. I chose the blue pin tuck with slate face plate. It gives me and my family piece of mind knowing that if something did happen, it will be easily known who I am and who to contact.

Thankfully I do not have any health issues but rest assured, if you do RoadID has you covered! You can personalize your medical ID bracelet with your unique medical condition, the medications you take, any allergies you have, plus emergency contact names and phone numbers to ensure your safety. You also can create an online profile to store all of your emergency info. It is a great service because you can update as often as needed, and when things change as far as address, emergency contact info, medications, health issues, etc… you can update instantly by just logging in. There is no up-front cost. Purchase includes 6 months of service,  and then it is only $9.99 per year after that.

Not only do they email you when you placed your order, they also send several emails letting you know what step they were at with your order. It also came with a personalized note from the gal who put my order together. And I couldn’t believe how fast it arrived! The packaging was super cool too. I have also ordered a couple different replacement bands so I can change to match my outfit 🙂

RoadID is not only great for runners, triathletes, hikers and those with health issues, it also makes the perfect gift for anyone on your list! Right now is a great time to buy and with Christmas fast approaching you don’t want to wait too long! They have an awesome Black Friday sale going on right now! Buff Tech Fleece Headband

“Disclaimer: I received a Buff tech fleece headband to review as part of being a BibRave Pro. Learn more about becoming a BibRave Pro (ambassador), and check out BibRave.com to review, find and write race reviews!”

20191011_174508.jpg

Winter will be here soon enough and we all know that Wisconsin winters can be brutal. I am super stoked that I am able to test out this awesome Buff tech fleece headband for just that reason! It came just in the nick of time too as the weather has already started to cool down. Bring on the cold and snow! Well, okay maybe not….BUT, I am ready when it gets here and my ears will be protected against the elements!

The tech fleece headband provides warmth and wind resistance while drying quickly, perfect for winter wear! It is made of brushed Carvico fabric. Stretchy polyester elastane with soft brushed fleece inside makes this not only lightweight but soft against your ears.

20191017_071157.jpg

They have a few different colors to choose from. I chose blue because that is my favorite color.

I do have a bit of a smaller head so sometimes the headband will slide up a bit which isn’t too much of an issue except when I want to keep my ears covered completely. But then I just grab some bobbie pins and it’s all good!

I have several different types, colors and patterns of Buffs and I love them all so I’m thrilled to have been able to add this to my growing collection! They offer free shipping on orders over $40 and returns are easy and painless.

Oofos Ooahh Project Pink Sandal – What if your pair of Oofos ended breast cancer?

“Disclaimer: I received a pair of Oofos OOahh Project Pink sandals to review as part of being a BibRave Pro. Learn more about becoming a BibRave Pro (ambassador), and check out BibRave.com to review, find and write race reviews!”

IMG_20190905_063355_528.jpg

This is my second pair of Oofos and my first pair from the project pink collection. I have to say that I think I love these slides even more than my other pair of Oofos!

After suffering from Plantar Fasciitis since February I needed/wanted something that is not only comfortable but fashionable, and these check both of those boxes for me. These truly have been amazing during my injury recovery. In fact, they are practically the only footwear that I can wear that do not cause me discomfort.

And the BEST part is that with any purchase you make from the project pink collection OR any other collection on oofos.com, Oofos will donate 3% toward breast cancer research. Oofos is dedicated to raising awareness and donating to this cause all year long.

Several aunts of mine have been affected by breast cancer so this cause is near and dear to my heart. I myself have also had a scare several years ago but I’m very thankful that everything turned out just fine. Do you have a story to share on how breast cancer impacted your life or the life of someone you know?

20190912_081707.jpg

Here are a few facts about Oofos:

OOfoam recovery technology absorbs 37% more impact than other footwear foams.

OOfoam impact absorbing recovery technology has been scientifically proven to reduce stress on your body while walking, allowing you to recover faster after a workout and feel better all day.

The footbed is designed to cradle your arches and move with your feet, which allows for a more natural feel. Trust me, your feet and legs will thank you!

They are easy to keep clean as they are machine washable.

Duncan Finigan is a longtime member of the OOFOS Family as the Director of Marketing. In 2014 , she was diagnosed with Stage IV Metastatic Breast Cancer. 3% of EVERY pair sold on OOFOS.com, will be donated to Project Pink. This contribution goes directly towards the critical work the Dana Farber Cancer Institute is doing in their research department to increase the survival rate of women with breast cancer. We all know someone whose life this terrible disease has impacted so that’s even more reason to give them a try. I may even have to get a third pair.

They also have an awesome rewards program. Head over to the Oofoos rewards page to check it out for yourself and start earning points right away!

BibRave Summit and Rock N Roll Chicago!

This year I was excited that I was able to attend the BibRave Summit in Chicago as well as run the Rock N Roll Chicago 10k.Fellow friend and BibRave Pro Amy and I left for our adventure Thursday night. We spent the night in Kenosha so that we didn’t have to get up so early to catch the train. This was my first time taking the train to Chicago (I usually drive in) and it was super easy and convenient.

On the ride into Chicago we found out that the service project that we were going to be doing was canceled due to the heat. I was a bit bummed because I was really looking forward to that. But, we were still going to meet up with the Orange crew.We had a short walk from the train station to our hotel. We were rooming with three other BibRave Pros (Stephanie, Jenn and Jessica) that we had never met in person.

These ladies were just as awesome as I thought they would be and we all hit it off immediately. It was like we had known each other forever! In a sense we did because we have been communicating online as well as on slack for quite some time. After dropping our stuff off at the hotel Amy and I grabbed a lyft and headed to the park to meet up with the BibRave crew. It was so great finally getting to meet the founders behind the BibRave community Tim and Jessica. They were so sweet and welcoming. And we found out that Tim was originally from Wisconsin too! We also got to meet Julia, Andy, Don and Carolyn as well as several other pros. They all were so welcoming and sweet. While most of the others went for a run, Amy, Don and I stayed back and shared some cheese curds 😍. After that we went for donuts, hung out a bit then headed back to the hotel to get ready to go to the expo. We met up with the rest of our roomies and started our journey to the expo.

After the expo we went back to get ready for the Orange carpet event at City Winery which was sponsored by Knockaround sunglasses. We had a professional photographer there taking pictures which was fun.

There were drinks and a fabulous dinner. We also were gifted two pair of sunglasses from Knockaround. One custom pair of BibRave orange and a new limited collection pair (second wind). We also got an awesome orange shirt to wear to the Cubs game the next day.Saturday we met up on the lakefront for a shakeout run and an awesome professional photo shoot. I didn’t want to run because of my plantar fasciitis but I didn’t want to miss the photo shoot so I hung out while the others ran. When they were done we had coffee and donuts and had more pictures taken. It was so cool!

We walked back to the hotel after and got ready for the Cubs game. This was my first time at Wrigley Field so that was a great experience. It was 106° with the heat index so it was a bit steamy there but we had fun.

Had to have a Chicago dog and then around the 5th inning we left to get ready for dinner that night.Dinner was at Current Kitchen and sponsored by Aftershokz.

The photographer was there again for more pictures! We also were the live audience for the recording of the BibRave Podcast with hosts Tim and Jessica, as well as guest Cindy Kuzma, author of the upcoming book, Rebound: Train Your Mind to Bounce Back Stronger from Sports Injuries which is available now for pre-order on Amazon. Some of what she talked about really resonated with me and I knew I had to talk one on one with her after.

She was super sweet and thanked me for sharing my story with her. Dinner was awesome and we had some special BibRave themed desserts.

We woke up early Sunday morning and got ready for the race. It was warm but thankfully not as warm as Friday and Saturday had been. We walked to the start line and met up with the BibRave crew for pics and then hit the port o potty line. By the time I got near the corrals it was so packed I couldn’t get in and had to wait until several other corrals ahead of us took off. The half and the 10k were together for a short time then they split off. I have run the half twice before and did the 10k this year. I loved the course which was mostly along the lake. You can read my full race review on the BibRave site.

We waited until all of the BibRave Pros finished the race then we walked back to the hotel, showered, packed and met everyone for lunch before heading back home on the train. It was a whirlwind weekend and one I’ll NEVER forget. My roomies and I are already working on trying to plan our next adventure!

If you love running and reviewing races and testing cool running products, BibRave is now accepting applications to become a BibRave Pro! This is an amazing community to be a part of and the perks are pretty nice too 😉 Head on over to bit.ly/2FxiKT7 and apply now! We would love to have you on the Orange crew!

About a month left before the Eau Claire Half Marathon. Am I ready? No. Will I be ready? Probably not. But I will do my best, finish the race no matter how much I have to walk and how slow I have to go. Most importantly though, I will have a blast! I have had a tough year so far with injuries, weight gain and depression and my training has really taken a hit. But thankfully I’ll have the crowds and the views to carry me through!

I have several friends who have ran this race in the past and they have nothing but good things to say about it. They have a Full Marathon, Half Marathon, 5K and a kids race. The Marathon relay is sold out. But, if you are not up for running/walking one of the races, please consider being a volunteer. They could always use more! There are bridges galore and so many beautiful views. And I hear there will be donuts there too 😉 I am all for that! There is a huge finish line party that includes the following:

Food Trucks at the Finish Line…. and we can’t forget to mention the Beer Tent. All runners will receive a free beer or root beer with their race bib tag. Food trucks include:

Eau Claire Half Marathon

Disclaimer: I received free entry into the Eau Claire Half Marathon as part of being a BibRave Pro. Learn more about becoming a BibRave Pro (ambassador), and check out BibRave.com to review find and write race reviews!

I recently registered for the Eau Claire Half Marathon and I’m super excited to run a home state race! This race was named number 5 on the BibRave 100 list making it a “must run” race to see what all the hype is about. There are some races that I love, and will run year after year but for the most part I like to try to find new races to run, so this year I picked Eau Claire. The race is only a few hours drive for me so I will get a mini get a way but not have to spend an arm and a leg on travel.

2,000 runners participate in the Half Marathon and are supported by the entire community cheering and lining the entire course. They also have a full Marathon, Marathon Relay (which is already sold out), 5K and a kids race. But, if you are not up to run/walk then why not volunteer? All races need a lot of volunteers to help make things run smoothly.

I also have heard from various runners who have ran this race that the Blugold Mile at mile 10.5 is one of their favorite parts of the course, with over 1,000 students and volunteers from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire that are there to cheer and support the runners. There are 11 very cool bridges that runners/walkers will cross as well as some breathtaking views!

I have checked out the list of vendors that will be at the expo and I have to say I am pretty excited! There are some really great ones that will be there. Maybe I better start working some OT?

The finish line has a beer tent and food trucks. 10% of the proceeds from the Food Trucks will be going to Make-a-Wish.  They also have a kids zone with a lot of fun things for the kids to check out! If you are looking for a cool spring Marathon why not sign up and run Eau Claire Marathon with me and some of my fellow BibRave Pros? Use code Bibrave10 to save $10 off the full or the half and code Bibrave5 to save $5 off the 5k or kids race.

Surf City Half Marathon

Disclaimer: I received free entry into the Surf City Half Marathon as part of being a BibRave Pro. Learn more about becoming a BibRave Pro (ambassador), and check out BibRave.com to review find and write race reviews!

Flight and room are booked! Now the countdown begins. February 3rd will be here before I know it!

I had been having some knee issues and decided to go see my orthopedic surgeon. Thankfully it’s nothing serious and I got the green light to go ahead and start bumping up my miles. I still have to be careful so I don’t irritate it again and he told me no hills for a while. Oh darn! Lol. Thankfully Surf City Half Marathon is a flat course so I don’t have to worry about that. I still will probably have to walk quite a bit because I don’t want to push too much and re-injure myself. But I’m okay with that because that will just give me more time to enjoy the amazing ocean views!

I choose races for various reasons but the two biggest reasons are the course and the swag. I love the ocean/beach and just look at the views (pictured above) I also love a unique medal and this one is really unique!

There are several race distances to choose from. The Marathon, Half Marathon, 5K and the 1 mile Cowabunga Beach Challenge, as well as a virtual option. So, there is a race for everyone! If you have family/friends who are coming along with you and they don’t want to run, they could always volunteer.
There are so many reasons to run this race. The views, the flat course, the bling, the weather and the atmosphere. This is one that you don’t want to miss out on! Use code SCMBR10 to save 15% and join me and my fellow BibRave Pros for an experience you’ll never forget!

California, here I come! This will be my first race in California and I am super excited! I love the beach and sunny skies and have not been to California in quite a few years. This will be the perfect destination for a race to escape the frozen tundra of Wisconsin in February for a few days so, it is a win, win! I picked this race because of its location and beautiful course with oceanfront views!

I have been dealing with a knee issue since October and am a little worried about how training, as well as the actual race will go but, I will enjoy it nonetheless! I am sure I will do plenty of walking but the cutoff for the half marathon is VERY generous with a time limit of approximately 5 – 5.5 hours! The full marathon has a time limit of 6 hours.

There are several race distances to choose from. The Marathon, Half Marathon, 5K and the 1 mile Cowabunga Beach Challenge, as well as a virtual option. If you aren’t into racing you could always volunteer. Races cannot run without the help of the amazing volunteers!

Event Highlights:
• Oceanfront Marathon and Half Marathon Course on Pacific Coast Highway – Out and Back
• Award Winning Surfboard Medals for all distances. Kids, too!
• Average High Temperature on Race Day 68 degrees
• Long Sleeve Participant Shirts for Marathon & Half Participants

• Short Sleeve Shirts for 5K
• FREE Beer at Sunday’s Sand Bar, friends and family welcome! (21+ with ID)
• Live Surf Band Entertainment
• 3 Day California Lifestyle Expo
• Complimentary Live Athlete Alerts for Participants and their supporters
• Lots of Parking and FREE Shuttles to Start/Finish Areas

If you are interested check out Surf City Marathon and use code SCMBR10 to save 15%! After you register, make sure to add your name to the start list of the race at Athlinks

Berlin Marathon/Prague Vacation

I was super excited when I got the email that I would be running the Berlin Marathon this year. This was my bucket list marathon. I was supposed to go with a Twitter friend as we had put our names in the lottery together. Another Twitter friend (Kat) had gotten in and the three of us decided to stay together. I rented a three bedroom/three bathroom apartment and was very happy with it but without going into detail (because it is still a sore spot with me) the one “friend” turned out to be not a very nice person. So, Kat and I were able to switch to a smaller apartment which was in an amazing location and we had a really great time.

20180913_171628.jpg

We also were able to meet up with another Twitter friend (Megan) from Australia who has been to Berlin for vacation in the past and she became our “tour guide” for the day. We had the BEST day ever! The three of us who had never met in person until this trip were like old friends. We had such an enjoyable day and I am blessed to call them both great friends now. I am hopeful that we will see each other again in the future.

20180914_120117.jpg

My training did not go the best for this Marathon so my goal was to just finish. Suffering from depression and a weight gain because of that depression made it hard to train properly. The day was a bit warm for me so I knew I would struggle. I have to say that as far port o potties go, this was by far the worst I had ever experienced. They did not have nearly enough at the start and a lot of the ones they did have were locked so you could not even use those. They had quite a few urinal buildings so it seemed like they were really catering to the men. On the course though I felt like they had enough, but my friend said they ran out of toilet paper. The first water stop was not until the 5k mark and the second one around the 10k mark so I was glad I had my own water with me. After the second water stop they became more frequent which was nice. They had tons of stops with fruit which I took advantage of. They also had a couple of spots that you could stop and get a massage if you needed one. I thought that was really cool. If I wasn’t going so slow at that point I maybe would have stopped for a quick massage. The crowd support was amazing and the views were spectacular! I was feeling great up until mile 10 when I hit a wall. I really started to struggle mentally and emotionally. At one point I wanted to stop and call my Dad (who is a seasoned Marathoner) and just have him tell me I could do it and to not stop. I decided to just keep going because of the time difference and not knowing if I would even get ahold of him, plus if I stopped I knew I would have a hard time getting going again. I normally do a 3 min walk/ 1 min run but at this point I was doing more walking than running. I just kept telling myself to keep moving and run when I could. It was a really tough day for me and even though it was not my worst marathon time, it was not my best either. I finished and could not have been happier!

20180916_170246.jpg

After Berlin I traveled to Prague by myself via train to spend 6 days relaxing and having fun. It was unseasonably warm so I was happy I packed quite a bit of summer clothing. My last 2 days in Prague were a bit cooler but other than that it was quite warm.

20180920_095434.jpg

20180919_095024.jpg

Prague is a beautiful city and I really enjoyed it. I did a lot of sightseeing and people watching. I met several people from the States and had some great conversations. I walked everyplace I went in Prague. They had plenty of public transit but I just felt more comfortable walking due to a bit of a fiasco I had getting to my hotel via public transit. Thankful for a stranger who could clearly see that I was lost. He stopped and got me going in the right direction.

I also went on a 10 mile hike to their amazing National Park (Bohemian Switzerland). It was so beautiful and peaceful there. There were three ladies from PA (one of who is currently living in Prague) and a guy from AZ on the tour/hike. Our guide was very knowledgeable and funny. We stopped at a quaint restaurant and had an amazing Czech lunch. I am really glad I took this hike and would highly suggest it if you ever find yourself in Prague.

20180922_160245.jpg

This was simply an amazing trip that I will never forget! A once in a lifetime kind of trip. I can’t wait to see where the next adventure takes me!

Happy Running/Traveling

Shay Hirsch is the inspiration behind this race. She was an avid runner from Boise who was diagnosed with multiple myeloma (a form of blood cancer) and she bravely fought this battle for 11 years. Now her memory is honored by incorporating into the race her favorite book which is the Wizard of Oz. All proceeds are donated to her favorite charities.

There is a race for everyone! A marathon, half marathon, 10k, 5k, relay and a kid’s race. On October 28th you will run through neighborhoods of the lovely Boise, Idaho. This is a flat, fast course so it is great for runners of all abilities. And if you are not up for being a participant you could always volunteer.

They just announced the medal for the race (pictured above) and I think it is awesome and I cannot wait to earn one in just a little over 7 weeks! I can’t believe that the race will be here before I know it! This year has been a tough one as far as my training has gone. I have had some health issues as well as a weight gain that has caused my training to suffer. But, I am as determined as ever to do my best at this race. I signed up for the Wonder Challenge which consists of the 1 mile and 5k on Saturday followed by the international half marathon on Sunday. This will be my first ever challenge run which is kind of hard to believe seeing as I have been a runner for over 14 years. I guess I just never had the desire to try a challenge before. I am super excited about these races and although I know it will be tough I plan to enjoy it fully!

I also really like the design of the shirts but I kind of wish the different races had different colors, but only because I will be getting three of them for the three races I will be running. The backs of the shirts are different for the international compared to the US only races.

I just checked out the vendor list for the expo and there are going to be some awesome booths there! I can’t wait to check it out. You can head over to the website for all the info on the expo or anything else you are looking for. Just go to https://www.freepmarathon.com/ Although you can no longer register for the international races you can still register for one of the US only races. If you want to save 10% use code 2018DETROCKS. Also make sure to add your name to the start list of the race on Athlinks. Hope to see you there!

In less than two weeks I will be visiting our State Capitol of Madison WI for the Run Madtown 5k twilight run. This race starts and ends at the Capitol building. The course is a bit challenging with a hill near the very end of the race. It is just starting to get dark as the 5k is crossing the finish line and the Capitol building is all lit up. They also have a kids race that starts at 6:30 and a 10k that starts right after the 5k which starts at 8:00 pm. Those are both on Saturday night. Then on Sunday they have a half marathon. You can also do the conquer the capital challenges that also include the Marathon in November. If you want more information on any of them check out the Run Madtown web page. But don’t wait too long as online registration closes May 23rd! Use code RMRAVE18 to save 10%. There is also an app to track runners and walkers for Android as well as Apple.

After the race enjoy some food and a beer in true Wisconsin style! I can’t say enough about this race. The organization is awesome and the after party is great as well. This will be my second year running this one and it has fast become a favorite! My Dad and friends run this race every year and really enjoy it as well. AND, they offer free race pictures! What is not to love about that?! Everyone receives an awesome finishers medal as well. This is one event you won’t want to miss!

Once signed up make sure to head over to Athlinks and add your name to the start list. Then after the race claim your results! Athlinks is a free “one stop shop” to collect all of your race results and have a little friendly competition with your “rivals”

I am excited to be running the Madtown twighlight 5k again this year. This will be my second year running the event. The picture above is after my finish last year. They have free photos! Who doesn’t like free photos? And keeping with Wisconsin style….Beer and pizza after the event.

Last year I was signed up to run the 10k but backed down to the 5k due to an injury. I was shocked at how well I did though. I took 5th in my AG! The event is in the Capital of Wisconsin, Madison. It starts and finishes right near the capital building which is pictured below behind me. It runs through the streets of Madison and there is quite a big hill right near the finish but nothing you can’t handle! When you finish it is just starting to get dark. One of my favorite finish lines. They also have a half marathon the following day. If you are not able to run it why not volunteer? Races are always looking for volunteers.

Grandad Half Marathon

FB_IMG_1519868915544

The race starts up on the top of Grandad Bluff. If you have never been there you are missing out. The views from the top are amazing! I like that the first few miles are downhill and the rest of the race is mostly flat. There will also be breathtaking views of the mighty Mississippi River!  Plus in keeping with true Wisconsin fashion there are brats and beer waiting for you once you cross the finish line. That’s my kind of race! What more could anyone want? There are events for everyone as well as plenty of volunteer opportunities.

With less than 4 weeks until the Festival Foods Grandad Half Marathon my training seems to be going well. I have been slowly bumping up my weekly mileage and I am feeling it. Normally I would start to taper soon but with having some longer races on the horizon I will not be tapering. Instead I will be using this as more of a training run but I also will try to push myself to run the best race I can. I am super excited about this race due to the fact that the last time I signed up to run it I was injured and had a DNS. Also, the fact that I will get to spend the weekend with one of my beautiful Daughters is just the icing on the cake. She lives in the area of the race so I will be staying with her. Maybe after the race we can head over to the Pearl for some ice cream (my favorite place to visit when I go to LaCrosse).

Once registered I went to Athlinks and added myself to the start line. If you have not yet signed up for Athlinks what are you waiting for? Head over there and in a few clicks you can set up a free account and start claiming your results and adding yourself to the start line of this and any other race you are running. If you would like a little more info check out my blog post.

The prices for this race are very reasonable and do not go up until April 30th. BUT, you can save 10% by using code BIBRAVE18. Head on over to Grandad Half  and register. This is one you are not going to want to miss!

ChThe views are amazing on the course of  the Hapalua Half Marathon!

Only 12 more days until “Hawaii’s Half Marathon” But don’t fret if you haven’t signed up yet as there is still time. And if you use code BIBRAVEHAPALUA you can save 10% off entry. Online registration closes: April 1, 2018 at 23:59 HAWAII time but you are still able to sign up at the expo. The Half Marathon has NO time limit so it is perfect for runners and walkers alike! And if you have an Athlinks account you can add your name to the start list. If you do not, head over to Athlinks and get signed up. Then add your name to the start list and when the race is done claim your results!

The beautiful Hapalua course starts in Waikiki as the sun is coming up and takes in downtown Honolulu, returning to Waikiki  before going up and around Diamond Head. You can see your finish on the big screen in the finishers village in Kapiolani Park and then enjoy an awesome after party with shaved ice and hot, freshly made malasadas.

Below is the course map. Look how close most of this course is to the ocean! You can’t beat views like that!

They have something pretty cool called “The Chase”. In the Hapalua Chase, the best local runners from Hawaii get a head start on some of the best professionals runners in the world. The pros will chase down the local guys and girls to the finish line.

Team Hawaii will get head starts/handicaps from 8 to 24 minutes on the professionals. Philip Tarbei from Kenya will be back to defend his title. If you want to read more about the the chase head over to https://www.thehapalua.com/the-chase and check it out.

Athlinks

Athlinks_Logo_Horizontal_2C_RGB.png

I had never heard of Athlinks until it was introduced to me through BibRave. What is Athlinks? It is a website to view, save and share your race results. The Athlinks app for iOS and Android is an awesome resource for athletes to connect with friends and other athletes from all over the world. Compete with rivals, discover new challenges and races. It is easy to sign up and once you do you can “claim your results” and get started searching for races and add yourself to the start list. Find and follow your friends. You will get an email notification when someone new follows you. And, as soon as a new result is available you will get a notification to “claim your results” as is shown below. When you click the link it will bring up all of the races that have results with your name. I found a few other people with the same name as me so, if the results are not yours you do nothing but if they are, go ahead and claim them and they will be added to your results page.

One of the many neat things about Athlinks is that I found results from past races that I had all but forgotten about. I even found a PR that I didn’t remember having. It keeps track of all of your PR’s which is something I am not the best at so it is great to have that information all in one location.

PhotoGrid_1521711167369

Here I have added myself to the start line of several races I will be running this year. Two of which I will be running for BibRave.

20180320_051549

You can click on any of your results listed and it will bring up a screen like below. It shows time/pace, overall results, gender results and age group results. You then can click on the certificate and it will bring up another screen where you can download your results and even share them to Facebook. How cool is that?

Screenshot_20180322-152440

Screenshot_20180322-152518

You can find your “rivals” and have a bit of a friendly competition. Rivals are those who have run the same races as you. It shows wins and losses meaning that if your time was better in that race, then you win and if their time was better, then they win. It also shows your friends upcoming events so you can follow along on their race. Head over to Athlinks and sign up. You can follow me on Athlinks if you would like by clicking here

Several years back when both of my daughters lived in LaCrosse I had signed up to run the half marathon. But, after an injury I was unable to train and even though I still went to visit my daughters I sadly had to back out of the race. So, I am thrilled that I have another opportunity to take this race on. Only one of my girls still lives in that area so I am happy that I can spend some one on one time with her that weekend. I might have even talked her into doing the 5K. You can choose from the half marathon, the half relay, the 5K, youth races, the time trial (This event offers a unique experience for participants, climbing 500 feet over 1.5 miles) or the granddad challenge which consists of the time trial Friday night and the half marathon on Saturday. There also is a cycle time trial Friday night as well as a bike race on Sunday. And if you are not up for one of the events you can always volunteer. Races are always on the look out for volunteers.
It is a beautiful course starting at the top of Grandad bluff. The views up there are amazing! The first 4 or so miles are all downhill. It is a fast course and you can enjoy the views as you run down the bluff and alongside the Mississippi River then finishing in beautiful Riverside Park.

Also make sure you check out Athlinks which is an online website (they also have an app you can download) that keeps track of your races. Create an account then add yourself to the start line of the Grandad half like I did.

I just registered for the Freep! I am so excited as this has been on my list of must run races. New this year is the Motor City Challenge Series which consist of the following: The Temptation: 1-Mile + 5K, The Wonder: 1-Mile + 5K + International Half-Marathon and The Supreme: 1-Mile + 5K + Full Marathon. All are expected to sell out so you are going to want to sign up as soon as possible. I will be running the Wonder challenge. This will be the first time I will be doing a challenge like this. Usually I just run one race so I am a bit nervous as I will be coming off running a full marathon the month before as well. There is race for everyone including a kids race. If you do not want to participate in any of the races think about volunteering. The race cannot be successful without the help of many volunteers.

Range Roller

Disclamer: I received a Range Roller from Medi-Dyne as part of being a Medi-Dyne ambassador. All views are my own.

I have tons of issues with sore, tight muscles and I try foam roll after ever run. I decided to try out the Range Roller as it is a bit more portable than my foam roller. I really like it. It hits all of those knots and tight muscles and it gets into spots that your average foam roller will not get into to. It is also easy to pack in your duffle bag and take with you if you are traveling. I have to say that I would highly recommend this product. If you would like to get this or any of their other items go to http://www.medi-dyne.com and enter code ARB20 at checkout for 20% off you purchase.

Cho-Pat Knee Compression Sleeve

Disclamer: I received a Cho-Pat Knee Compression Sleeve from Medi-Dyne as part of being a Medi-Dyne ambassador. All views are my own.

When I choose the knee sleeve I measured per the sizing chart and ordered a size medium. I should have sized up though. It fit the knee area perfectly but my thighs are a bit bigger so it was extremely tight in that area so unfortunately I could not wear it for long. I do have to say though that if I would have sized up I am sure I would have loved it. Just having it on for a short time really helped with the discomfort that I was having in my knee after a very long training run. I cannot give a true review though because I was unable to wear it for more than a few minutes. My advice would be to size up if you are in doubt. 2Toms Stink Free Detergent

Disclamer: I received 2Toms sports detergent from Medi-Dyne as part of being a Medi-Dyne ambassador. All views are my own.

I have to say that when I run or workout I sweat a lot. I am embarrassed to say that my clothes smelled horrible! I have tried so many different brands of “sports detergents” but nothing seemed to make my clothes smell fresh and clean until I tried 2Toms. This is seriously the BEST sports detergent I have ever tried and I will never use another brand. You do not need to use a lot to get results you are looking for.
I have traveled for races and my smelly clothes sometimes would have to sit overnight until I got home the next day. Even after sitting that long, as soon as I washed them they came out smelling fresh and clean again. They even have single use packs that you can throw in your bag and take along with you wherever you go. All you need is a sink or a container that you can fill with water. Pour a little 2Toms in and soak for a bit. Swish around then rinse and your clothes come out fresh and clean. If you haven’t tried this yet you really need to. Sport shield for her

Disclamer: I received sportshield for her from Medi-Dyne as part of being a Medi-Dyne ambassador. All views are my own.

This cycle was all about blisters and chafing. I chose to try out the 2toms sportshield for her. I chose this product because I do have issues with chafing and let me tell you, this worked amazing! I had no issues at all and it went on easy. It stays put until you wash it off with soap and water. The only downfall is that it takes a while to dry completely and it does leave a bit of a shine where it was applied. It does not have a “greasy” feel like some products can but rather a soft smooth feel. I use sportshield for her every time I go for a run as well as whenever I race. It has made it through numerous 5k’s and 10k’s as well as a half marathon. I am looking forward to using it during my first attempt at a 50k in just a few short weeks. This product comes in a roll on as well as convenient single use packs. I really like the single use packs because they are easy to take along incase you missed a spot or if you start chafing someplace you didn’t think you would. I highly recommend this product and if you are interested in trying it out go to http://www.medidyne.com and use ARB20 for 20% off your purchase of this or any of the other amazing products offered.

Stay blister and chaf free!

ProStretch Plus from Medi-Dyne

Disclamer: I received a ProStretch Plus as well as 2Toms FootShield from Medi-Dyne as part of being a Medi-Dyne ambassador. All views are my own.

I was offered a stretching tool of my choice to try out and review as part of being a Medi-Dyne Ambassador. I chose the ProStretch Plus. I have never used a stretching tool before so I wasn’t sure how it would work or if I would like it. I have to say, it felt amazing to get that kind of a stretch. I have tight calves and sometimes have issues with them while running. While using the ProStretch Plus I was able to stretch out my calves and run without any issues. I am not always the best with stretching. I feel like it takes too much time but, with the ProStretch Plus it was fast and easy. I would highly recommend this product if you have tight calves or any other lower leg issues. It is customizable so it doesn’t matter what your shoe size is and you can get the exact stretch needed.
I was also given a brand new product to try out. It is 2Toms FootShield. It is supposed to keep feet dry and odor free. It is a roll on and the one thing that I was not too thrilled with was that I felt it took too long to dry on my feet. But, once it was dry it seemed to keep my feet nice and dry. Not that my feet sweat a whole lot but they do to some degree. I personally don’t think I have an issue with my feet smelling bad so I cannot say one way or the other if it kept them odor free. I will definitely use it for my normal day to day activities though to make sure my feet stay dry.

The road to Chicago

I thought I would give this blogging thing a try. This first post will probably be a bit long but I promise to keep future ones short, sweet and to the point. Maybe this will help with my training for the 2017 Chicago Marathon. This will be my second Marathon and although my first one did not go as planned and I swore off full marathons (my Dad laughed when I told him that) I decided I needed redemption so here I am. My Dad was a Marathoner (he even ran a sub 3 for his first Boston) and I started running in 2004 after I quit smoking and have been running off and on since. I am not a fast runner by any means but I know if I train hard I have the ability to be a decent runner. I have even had the occasional age group award. I have run about 15 half marathons and numerous 5ks and 10ks. 7 years go I had planned to run my first full. I was going to run the Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon. They even gave me the bib number I requested (262). I was injured on my 16 mile run and was unable to recover in time. This year I finally decided I would give it another try so I signed up for Grandmas Marathon. Training was going fairly well even though I was having some health issues. 5 weeks before the Marathon I was in a car accident that totaled my car and left me with a slight concussion and whiplash. I had to take 2 full weeks off of running at the peak of my training. My longest was an 18 miler the week before I was in the accident. I was worried I would not be able to run it. My first long run after being off was only 14 miles and it was very tough. The next week I did a 20 miler and it went better than I expected. I had high hopes that I would do well. Race day came and it was hot and humid. I got to mile 8 and things went downhill fast. I had to do more walking than running. I got to the half way point and was told they had black flagged the race but I was determined to finish even if I had to crawl (which at one point I thought I might have to). We saw people dropping out of the race left and right. I had stopped sweating and could not drink or take anymore gels either. My friend gave me some salt tablets. I can not say one way or the other if they helped. I was able to eventually start drinking water again. I wanted to cry and give up so bad because at this point I could not even run anymore. I was sunburnt and my feet hurt so bad. I even wanted to rip off my shoes at one point. After 6 hours and 39 minutes I crossed the finish line. I was happy to be done because about 2,000 had not been able to finish but I was disappointed with my time. It should have taken me about 5 or 5-1/2 hours at the most. I said never again and I really meant it even though everyone laughed at me and said I would sign up for another. I said no way! Chicago lottery opened up and well……I put in for it. After I clicked the submit button I felt sick to my stomach. Then I prayed I wouldn’t get in but no such luck. So, here I am about to start the long training process of running another Marathon. I will (hopefully) be able to redeem myself. Thank you for taking the time to read this.
